Surrey County Council approves £2.5 million funding for new Bookham Youth and Community Centre

At the meeting of the Surrey County Council Cabinet held on 23rd February, SCC approved the funding of £2.5M for the construction of a new shared-use building to replace the old Bookham Youth Centre on Lower Road. The new development at the Lower Road Rec has been designed to accommodate various community uses such as the Bookham Colts – youth football team and a children’s day nursery. (You can see the approval in the video link below)

This week’s funding allocation is great news, but the next step in the project will be the anticipated granting of outline planning permission by Mole Valley District Council’s Development Management Committee. The date of which is yet to be confirmed.

So far over 90 residents have submitted comments / Letters of Representation and the feedback we have had from SCC is that your comments to date have been extremely helpful in moving the development of this much needed community facility forward.

It is very important that our MVDC councillors know how much support there is for the proposal within the local community, so that the outline planning application gets approved. Please do add your support for the project.

Note: The outline permission is seeking approval for the principle of the community centre, with the overall design of the building to be determined at a later date.

Cllr Clare Curran also gives the background of the importance of this new facility to the Bookham community.
