Opportunity to apply for your oak trees to be sprayed
Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) is a non-native species of moth in the UK, first observed in the south of England in 2005. The caterpillars of this species nest in oak trees, they can cause leaf damage which affects the overall health of the tree and can make it more susceptible to other tree pests and diseases. In addition, the hairs of these caterpillars may pose health risks to both people and animals. More information about OPM can be found on GOV.UK.
The government OPM management programme is aimed at preventing OPM from spreading and reducing its impact. The most reliable and effective method of managing OPM is to spray affected trees with an approved insecticide or bio-pesticide in the spring. You can read more about spraying on the OPM webpages mentioned above.
We are offering the opportunity to apply for the spraying of oak trees at residential properties within the OPM established area as part of the 2026 OPM management programme. All applicants need to complete a new application this year, regardless of whether they have applied in previous years. Please note you are only eligible to apply for the offer if:
· the oaks are at a residential property such as a house or flat
· the property has four or fewer oak trees at least 2m tall
· the oak trees are all within the property boundary for example, in your garden
There may be operational reasons as to why your application may not be successful. Where this is the case, we will write to you.
Please bear in mind there is a limited budget available, and due to the volume of applications we are expecting, not all will be approved.
Please also be aware that spraying is only effective on trees where OPM is present and does not act as a preventative of OPM infestations. If your neighbours have oak trees in their gardens that have evidence of OPM, please make them aware they may also be eligible for support through this pilot.
To be considered for the programme you need to submit an application by 17.00 on 30 January 2026.
Please apply using the online form – https://arcg.is/0X5j09. (Please note that the online form address is case sensitive, and the 0 values are the number 0.)
If you have difficulties completing the online form, please email us and we will send you a copy to complete.
We will inform you of the result of your application by mid-March 2026.
All applications will be assessed after the deadline; the order in which applications are received will not affect the outcome of their success. If your application is successful, Forestry Commission survey contractors may undertake surveys prior to treatment to confirm that your property is eligible to be included in the pilot
