Please find below a link to the BRA's response to the initial consultation on the re-development of the former Keswick Care Home Site.  The closing date for comments is 24th September.  Comments can be submitted online via https://keswick.communityuk.site/ or by email to feedback@yourshout.com. 

Whilst the focus of the consultation is on massing, scale and layout, the BRA has sought clarity related to the proposed occupancy:

• Uncertainty over the mix of tenancies – social housing vs. mental health needs.

• The nature of the mental health needs, their long-term support and risk assessment.

• The expected duration of tenancies (social housing and mental health).

• How any of the above may change if the site was to be managed by a development partner?

It is important that comments, whether supportive or challenging, are based on fact rather than supposition.

In addition to the comments in the BRA's letter, we would like to clarify one specific matter.  On 22nd September the BRA was made aware of comments recorded at SCC's Cabinet meeting of 27th May 2025, i.e. that "the Keswick site in Great Bookham [being redeveloped for housing, including units allocated to Adult Social Care for people with mental health needs] was welcomed by local residents and local leaders who understand the need for these sites."  The BRA’s General Committee has been supportive in principle of the site being appropriately redeveloped; the semi derelict building and its site screening remains an ongoing eyesore and concern to residents.  However, this support has been qualified by caution and concerns including about the nature of the mental health needs that might qualify for residency, their care and support, the suitability and compatibility with nearby uses and the overall balance of occupancy.  Bookham has a strong track record in accommodation for people with a variety of care requirements and their integration into our community.
